Sri Lanka played smart cricket - Ross Taylor ? Cricket News Update

The Sri Lankan tour was without any doubt a disaster for New Zealand, who failing to win a single game, were defeated on Saturday in the penultimate match of the five-match ODI series by seven wickets at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium, Sooriyawewa, Hambantota.

It was yet again a rain affected encounter where New Zealand after being put into bat could score only 131 for eight in 32 overs.

The target was never enough to seriously challenge the hosts, who conveniently reached the asking score in 26.2 overs.

Submitting to Sri Lanka?s superior play, New Zealand skipper Ross Taylor in his post-match interview said, ?Sri Lanka played smart cricket and put us under pressure from the start. We are so close in these games and we are taking positives out from this game. Our bowlers bowled very well. We hope to at least get a win and avoid 4-0."

The series has been disappointing for New Zealand, who were fighting a war on two fronts ? one with the Sri Lankan team and the other with the Sri Lankan weather. Rains were cruel to the tourists, who did not have any answer to the circumstances they were caught in.

New Zealand?s batting line-up looked depleted with them mainly relying on BB McCullum, who was coming back from injury.

In the bowling department, they really had nothing to offer and were mostly depending on the Sri Lankan batsmen to make mistakes instead of actually posing a serious threat.

On the other hand, Sri Lanka have had a great series even with their bowlers not showing full potential, still the performances were good enough to leave New Zealand in ruins.

?We were lucky with the toss, but the bowlers stuck to their task. Batting under lights here was going to be tough, but both Kumar and Chandy batted very well and put up a decent partnership. Kumar was disappointed that he missed out in the last two innings, but he made up today. The win gives us an opportunity to experiment in the last game, but we will try to win the game," said Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene, who was glad to see his side take the series. ??
