I was complaining in a recent post that Gmail doesn?t properly integrate with Google Drive and doesn?t let you upload files to Google Drive instead of sending attachments. The new compose interface added this feature and you can now click ?insert files using Drive?, upload a file or select an existing one.
It?s still not a seamless experience, you have to click a separate button and deal with permission issues, but it encourages users to upload files to Google Drive and use the Google Drive apps. Gmail tries to solve permission issues by prompting with the option to change sharing settings.
Why would you upload files to Google Drive instead of using attachments? You can send bigger files (10 GB files vs 25 MB attachments), you can edit documents collaboratively, write comments, upload new versions of the files and manage revisions, you can delete the file or change permissions.
Unfortunately, when you send links to Google Drive files, it?s more difficult to download the files and you can no longer download them with one click.
There?s another problem: Gmail offers 10 GB of free storage, while Google Drive offers 5 GB of free storage, excluding Google Docs/Sheets/Slides files. More free storage would make GDrive more attractive.
Google says that GDrive integration is ?rolling out over the next few days and is only available with Gmail?s new compose experience?.
WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senators pressed ahead Thursday on a new set of tough sanctions against Iran's domestic industries as it seeks to cripple the Islamic republic's economy and thwart its nuclear ambitions.
Sens. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., and Mark Kirk, R-Ill., unveiled a package of penalties that would designate Iran's energy, port, shipping and ship-building sectors as entities of proliferation and sanction transactions with these areas. The legislation also would penalize individuals selling or supplying commodities such as graphite, aluminum and steel to Iran.
The punitive measures build on the sanctions on Tehran's oil industry that the two lawmakers have shepherded through Congress in the past year.
"Yes, our sanctions are having a significant impact, but Iran continues their work to develop nuclear weapons," Menendez said in a statement, adding that with the new penalties, "We will send a message to Iran that they can't just try to wait us out."
Kirk said the measure "will greatly increase the economic pressure on the Iranian regime and send a clear message of support to the Iranian people."
The sanctions are contained in an amendment the two lawmakers hope to add to a far-reaching defense policy bill that the Senate was debating and could wrap up by week's end. Congress has overwhelmingly backed previous efforts by Menendez and Kirk.
The legislation also would designate the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting and its president as human rights abusers for broadcasting forced televised confessions and show trials.
The United States and European Union have imposed tough sanctions on Iran that have weakened its economy. But Tehran has found ways to bypass the penalties, such as Turkey's use of gold to pay for Iranian natural gas imports.
The Menendez-Kirk measure would allow the president to impose sanctions in cases of the sale or transfer of precious metals, targeting efforts by Iran to circumvent the penalties.
Iran maintains that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
Mark Dubowitz, a sanctions expert and executive director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said there is strong bipartisan support for intense sanctions, with the goal of pushing the Iranian economy to the brink of economic collapse.
Only then "can the central thesis of the administration's sanctions policy be fairly tested: That crippling economic pressure will break the nuclear will of Iran's supreme leader and his Revolutionary Guards and lead them to meet their obligations under international law," Dubowitz said.
The president has 90 days from the legislation's enactment to act. The bill does include the authority to waive the sanctions based on national security.

?Parts providers in Apple?s supply chain will reportedly have to wait until the first quarter of 2013 to see their revenues bump up as the result of Apple?s newly released iPad mini and 21.5- and 27-inch iMac due to mass production issues with the products, according to industry sources,? Siu Han and Alex Wolfgram report for DigiTimes.
?The sources said AU Optronics (AUO) and LG Display (LGD) provide panels for the iPad mini and that AUO is having mass production issues,? Han and Wolfgram report. ?This has caused the overall shipment proportion of AUO panels used in the iPad mini to drop to about 22%, down from AUO?s original 40% target, added the sources.?
Han and Wolfgram report, ?Apple is said to have set a ten million shipment target for the iPad mini for the fourth quarter of 2012, but might only reach six million during the period largely as a result of production delays at AUO, said the sources.?
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - South Korean rap star Psy's music video "Gangnam Style" on Saturday became the most watched item ever posted to YouTube with more than 800 million views, edging past Canadian teen star Justin Bieber's 2-year-old video for his song "Baby."
The milestone was the latest pop culture victory for Psy, 34, a portly rap singer known for his slicked-back hair and comic dance style who has become one of the most unlikely global stars of 2012.
Psy succeeded with a video that generated countless parodies and became a media sensation. He gained more fame outside his native country than the more polished singers in South Korea's so-called K-Pop style who have sought to win international audiences.
YouTube, in a post on its Trends blog, said "Gangnam Style" on Saturday surpassed the site's previous record holder, Bieber's 2010 music video "Baby," and by mid-day "Gangnam Style" had reached 805 million views, compared to 803 million for "Baby." Within a few hours, "Gangnam Style" had gone up to more than 809 million views.
"Gangnam Style" was first posted to YouTube in July, and by the following month it began to show huge popularity on YouTube with audiences outside of South Korea.
"It's been a massive hit at a global level unlike anything we've ever seen before," said the YouTube blog.
The blog also said the "velocity" of the video's popularity has been unprecedented for YouTube.
In his "Gangnam Style" video the outlandishly dressed, sunglass-wearing Psy raps in Korean and dances in the style of an upper-crust person riding an invisible horse.
The song is named after the affluent Gangnam District of Seoul and it mocks the rampant consumerism of that suburb. Psy, whose real name is Park Jai-sang, is no stranger to wealth as his father is chairman of a South Korean semiconductor company.
His parents sent him to business school in the United States but he confesses that he bought musical instruments with his tuition money. He later graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston and won fame in South Korea with his 2001 debut album.
The viral success of "Gangnam Style" on YouTube also has translated into strong record sales. In late September, the song jumped to the top of the British pop charts and it also has sold well in other countries.
Popular parodies of the "Gangnam Style" video included one featuring the University of Oregon's duck mascot, and another done in the "Star Trek" language Klingon.
The official YouTube view count for Gangnam Style represents only the figure for the original video posted to the site, but copycat versions, parodies and videos by people commenting on the song have been posted to the site and elsewhere on the Web.
Counting all those different versions, "Gangnam Style" and its related videos have more than 2.2 billion views across the Internet, said Matt Fiorentino, spokesman for the online video tracking firm Visible Measures.
"Without the dance, I don't think it would have been as big as it is," Fiorentino said. "And the other thing is, Psy has a unique sense of humor which comes through in the video. He doesn't take himself too seriously."

Imagine I hand you the keys to an Apple Store.?
It's a big one, a warehouse-like, multiacre affair running floor-to-ceiling with Apple products in tightly packed rows. And it's yours to do with what you want.
Obviously, you'd sell everything. And within an hour, you'd be making money hand over fist. You'd have some costs?staff, bags, whatever?but nothing big. Customers would be lined up out the door. Even if I charged you a $5 fee for every device you sold, it's a spectacular deal.
After a while, though, things start to slow down, almost imperceptibly. You'd need more staff to pull items off shelves farther back in the store or closer to the ceiling. The hectic pace of extracting the right product would invariably lead to spills and clutter. More popular items like iPhone 5s would become harder to get to than things like first-generation iPads. But these are minor distractions.
Eventually, you start to sweat. You've given up your regular job to manage this massive moneymaker. It's taking you more and more time to find the products people want. It's not quite the cash cow it used to be. So I make a deal with you: If you find other Apple warehouses, I'll let you run those for the same fee. You dedicate staff to seeking out new stores, and you find some. But in each, the same problem repeats itself: a burst of high profits until products are harder to find.
Late one evening, the?New York Times?breaks a story revealing that the use of Apple products has been linked to serious, long-term health consequences. The effects are usually tiny, incremental but potentially serious; in very rare cases, they're suddenly fatal. There's some outcry, but the time lag and mental distance between use of the products and the health problems are great enough that most people ignore the link. The government promises to look into the problem, but in the interim, sales barely stumble at all.
But then you face a real problem. Something newer comes along. Better. Cheaper even than your bargain-basement prices, more popular, hipper. One day you're running an Apple Store. The next you are selling BlackBerry. Your customer base rapidly dries up. Customers in India and China are still eager to buy, but finding and shipping the products across the ocean proves harder than it looks.
You used to be the luckiest person in the world, blessed with the sweetest deal imaginable. Now, you run a string of stores in vacant malls with plummeting margins, unpopular products, and the looming specter that every BlackBerry you sell is the last nail in some poor fool's coffin.
You run, in short, a coal company. It is possible that there is a magic spell somewhere out in the world that can reverse the fortune of the coal industry. But the way things are going, that spell is buried deep underground where it's just far too expensive to get to. The American coal industry has key life-support mechanisms beeping by its bedside, but it's doomed.
That's difficult to deal with, particularly if you're the owner of a coal company. It's hard to deal with if you're a coal miner or live in a coal community. Coal has been so successful for so long, its halo of economic benefit so wide, that affection for coal is in some places religious. At tourist shops in West Virginia you can buy statuettes carved from coal, including crucifixes. Coal mines were once portals into the middle class. In the future they won't be.
The Apple Store analogy is the birth and decline of the coal industry in brief.
The good products are harder and more expensive to get to. After decades of extraction, rich seams of high-quality coal that run near the surface?have been exhausted. The Department of Energy's Energy Information Administration suggests that the United States?has enough coal reserves to last 239 years. In a breezy aside, it notes that "advancements in mining technologies have tended to compensate" for difficulties in extraction. "Mountaintop removal" mining is one such advancement. Coal companies simply blow apart the tops of hills instead of digging mine shafts, saving time and expense. (This haphazard process has?polluted more than one-fifth of streams in southern West Virginia.)
Other coal companies have turned to lower-quality coal, like?high-sulfur coal from Illinois, because the economic advantage of easy access to high-quality coal has vanished. Digging deeper and longer for higher-quality coal is not much cheaper than easily digging up lower-quality coal and running it through better "scrubbers," devices that remove the sulfur from emissions. Remember those scrubbers. We'll come back to them.

The New York congressman will step down from his role on the committee next year because of his party's term limits. But in the seven years as the top Republican on the committee, he has drawn more than his share of headlines.
King said in an interview with the Long Island Press published last week that he's proud of his work, especially his hearings focusing on Muslim radicalization "even if they were politically incorrect." He told the paper that being chairman "was the most rewarding experience of my public life" and said he achieved most of what he wanted to do by focusing the committee on "terrorism ? specifically Islamic terrorism because that is the main threat to the country."

Muslim Radicalization Hearings
In December 2010, King announced his intention to hold hearings on the "radicalization" of American Muslims. It sparked criticism as soon as he went public. His decision to appear on a television show produced by an anti-Muslim group shortly before the hearings certainly didn't help matters. King fought back against the criticism, claiming he wouldn't allow political correctness to "obscure a real and dangerous threat." But by the time of King's first hearing in March 2011, the focus had changed to whether it was a good idea to hold the hearing in the first place.
Ground Zero Mosque Investigation
King called in July 2010 for an investigation into the source of the funding of a mosque set to be built in lower Manhattan, near the site of the World Trade Center attack of Sept. 11, 2001. Earlier that year, he said building a mosque in that location was "very offensive" and wrong but that it could not be stopped because of the First Amendment. No investigation was ever launched.
Too Many Mosques
It wasn't only the Ground Zero Mosque that King had an issue with -- he told Politico in 2007 that there are "too many mosques in this country" in general. King later said he was taken out of context or misspoke. He said he meant to say that "too many mosques in this country do not cooperate with law enforcement."
Fugitive Hunting
King went on a operation to catch fugitives with the U.S. Marshals Service in March and, as TPM first reported, ended up getting into some hot water because of it. The problem was that King brought along a videographer, who ended up filming inside private homes in violation of federal policy. The footage, posted on YouTube by King's office, caused the Marshals Service to consider banning lawmakers and the media from riding along with deputies in the future. King initially defended the video, saying "everything I did was in full compliance with what the Marshals set out as the proper procedures."

IU seeks patent for discovery with implications for health care, climate change research
An international team of biologists led by Indiana University's David M. Kehoe has identified both the enzyme and molecular mechanism critical for controlling a chameleon-like process that allows one of the world's most abundant ocean phytoplankton, once known as blue-green algae, to maximize light harvesting for photosynthesis.
Responsible for contributing about 20 percent of the total oxygen production on the planet, the cyanobacteria Synechococcus uses its own unique form of a sophisticated response called chromatic acclimation to fine tune the absorption properties of its photosynthetic antenna complexes to the predominant ambient light color. The researchers identified and characterized an enzyme, MpeZ, that plays a pivotal role in the mechanism that allows two different water-soluble proteins in Synechococcus -- phycoerythrin I and II -- to alter their pigmentation in order to maximize photon capture for photosynthesis.
Scientists want to understand how cyanobacteria optimize their photosynthetic activities in different light conditions to gain a better appreciation of how human activities affect the phytoplankton's ability to produce oxygen and uptake the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, which they consume in order to grow. Science and industry also use the pigment-protein complex phycoerythrin for fluorescent imaging and as fluorescent markers in biotechnology and health care applications.
"We now have the ability to attach a novel chromophore, part of a molecule responsible for its color, to phycoerythrin, which provides a new chromophore-protein combination that absorbs and fluoresces at a wavelength that is not currently commercially available," said Kehoe, a professor in the IU Bloomington College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Biology. "Our results suggest that this new chromoprotein is brighter and more stable than most on the market today."
Kehoe also noted IU has begun the process of filing a patent on the invention.
The team found that the gene encoding the MpeZ enzyme is activated in blue light. Once produced, MpeZ then binds to antenna proteins containing pigments that normally catch green light and attaches an alternative chromophore that allows the antennae to capture blue light. The specific mechanism, called type IV chromatic acclimation, involves replacing three molecules of the green light-absorbing chromophore with an equal number of blue light-absorbing chromophore.
This color-shifting is reversible and is controlled by the ratio of blue to green light in the environment.
"These 'chromatic adapters' are true chameleons that can efficiently live in green coastal waters as well as in blue offshore waters by modifying their pigmentation," Kehoe said. "Synechococcus cells maintained in blue light harvest preferentially blue light, while cells grown in green light harvest more green."
"A phycoerythrin-specific bilin lyase-isomerase controls blue-green chromatic acclimation in marine Synechococcus" was published online in the Early Edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "We now have the ability to attach a novel chromophore, part of a molecule responsible for its color, to phycoerythrin, which provides a new chromophore-protein combination that absorbs and fluoresces at a wavelength that is not currently commercially available," said Kehoe, a professor in the IU Bloomington College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Biology. "Our results suggest that this new chromoprotein is brighter and more stable than most on the market today."
Kehoe also noted IU has begun the process of filing a patent on the invention.
The team found that the gene encoding the MpeZ enzyme is activated in blue light. Once produced, MpeZ then binds to antenna proteins containing pigments that normally catch green light and attaches an alternative chromophore that allows the antennae to capture blue light. The specific mechanism, called type IV chromatic acclimation, involves replacing three molecules of the green light-absorbing chromophore with an equal number of blue light-absorbing chromophore.
This color-shifting is reversible and is controlled by the ratio of blue to green light in the environment.
"These 'chromatic adapters' are true chameleons that can efficiently live in green coastal waters as well as in blue offshore waters by modifying their pigmentation," Kehoe said. "Synechococcus cells maintained in blue light harvest preferentially blue light, while cells grown in green light harvest more green."
"A phycoerythrin-specific bilin lyase-isomerase controls blue-green chromatic acclimation in marine Synechococcus" was published online in the Early Edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Co-authors with Kehoe, also affiliated with IU Bloomington's Indiana Molecular Biology Institute, were IU Ph.D. student Animesh Shukla; Avijit Biswas and Wendy M. The last time the Giants manhandled the Packers, outside linebacker Clay Matthews made it worse by saying the Packers beat themselves in the playoff meeting.
After last night?s demolition, there was no doubt about who did what to whom.
But the Packers took their 38-10 beating and chose to file it away as one of 16, not attaching any global significance to it.
?It?s one game,? Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said, via Jason Wilde of ESPNMilwaukee.com. ?Had a good opportunity to put ourselves in a better position than we?re in right now and didn?t do that. We?re going to be disappointed watching this film. [But] we have to move on. We?ve got to get a couple things shored up. When you win five in a row, everybody?s happy but, like I said last year during the [undefeated] run, there?s things that kind of go under the radar that need to be handled. Sometimes it takes a loss to handle those things.
?Now, that being said, I?ve never been on the side of this kind of loss before. But I know if you play long enough that at a certain point you will. Hopefully, we?ll remember this feeling and not let this kind of embarrassment to happen again. We?re better than this. We?re going to regroup.?
The Packers have shown at different points that they can be better than this, but until they show it against the Giants, the questions with linger.
New York?s strength is its pass-rush, and as presently constructed, the Packers can?t slow that down. And if Rodgers is on his back, he can?t pass.
Rodgers threw for 219 yards, with 61 of them coming on a first-quarter touchdown to Jordy Nelson. After that, Rodgers absorbed five sacks, and was seemingly chased out of the pocket on half his snaps.
?We were thoroughly beaten this evening. Congratulations to the New York Giants,? coach Mike McCarthy said. ?We were beaten in every facet, really starting with myself. I feel when your team performs that way, it starts with the head coach. . . .
?I think this is a game that really makes everybody look inside and find out what you?re about. I believe in what we?re about as a football team. I haven?t felt like this probably since the first game I coached as a Green Bay Packer head coach. We were beaten very thoroughly tonight. It doesn?t taste good. It doesn?t feel good.?
It was the biggest margin of defeat since a 35-7 loss to the Bears on Dec. 23, 2007, and the worst loss during the Rodgers era, surpassing a 51-29 loss to the Saints on Nov. 24, 2008.

Television legend Oprah Winfrey had a close call recently when she thought she would be diagnosed with breast cancer.
Winfrey never made a public comment about the medical scare, but she shared the experience before an audience of 5,000 at the 2012 O You! Conference in Los Angeles. A New York Times reporter was present and documented the confession in a story about Winfrey's struggle to gain a younger fan base and keep her work fresh.
The story also revealed that Oprah's chatter about the scare to the O You! audience was the first time she had spoken about the incident to her longtime best friend Gayle King.

"Ms. Winfrey, 58, has shown some signs of strain," the Times reported. "She arrived at the conference with faint shadows under her eyes and announced to her best friend, Gayle King, and the audience simultaneously that she had a breast cancer scare the week before. (It was ultimately a false alarm.) When Ms. King grew visibly upset, one woman chided Ms. Winfrey for not telling her friend ahead of time and ordered her to apologize to Ms. King - all before an audience."
Winfrey also spoke with The New York Times about O, The Oprah Magazine and the Oprah Winfrey Network. Her magazine, which was seen as one of the biggest success stories in print media in recent years upon its launch, has suffered slightly since the iconic "Oprah Winfrey Show" went off the air in May 2011.
But Winfrey said that she doesn't let news like that set her back, and she takes pride in the fact that her television channel OWN has seen consistent ratings growth in recent months. The most important thing to her, she said, is that people get what she puts out there, no matter how they receive it.
"I don't care what the form is," she said. "I care about what the message is."

The Acer Aspire S3-391-6046 ($648 list) proves that you don't have to start at $899 to get a decent ultrabook. To keep the price down, it uses an older second-generation Intel Core i3 processor, but that CPU is still faster than the AMD E series APU, Intel Atom, or Celeron CPU in other inexpensive laptops. The S3-391-6046 is also an inexpensive way to introduce your family to Windows 8 and that operating system's radically new interface. It's being featured at $499 at Walmart for Black Friday 2012, but it's still a well-equipped system after the price jumps back to the $648 regular price. It's a much better laptop than the netbooks you used to expect in this price range, and as such it comes recommended.
Design and Features
The S3-391-6046 looks every bit the ultrabook, with a thin and light design in line with other Acer ultrabooks like the Acer Aspire S5-391-9880. The S3-391-6046 measures by 8.52 by 12.59 by 0.68 inches (HWD). This means that it's much thinner and lighter than the budget laptop Editors' Choice Acer Aspire V5-571-6891 ($499.99 list, 4.0 stars). Granted, the V5-571-6891 is more of a desktop replacement laptop with a larger 15-inch screen and a DVD drive, but they are priced and aimed at the same budget market.
The S3-391-6046 is more portable, with a 13.3-inch screen with a 1,366-by-768 resolution (720p). That is smaller than the 1,920 by 1,080 resolution (1080p) found on ultrabooks like the Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A-R5102F, but that's okay, since you'll pay quite a price premium for that 1080p screen, and it's not absolutely necessary at this budget price point. The 1080p resolution is more important to movie buffs and people who do a lot a multitasking with multiple windows open (like spreadsheets), and we think 1,366-by-768 is adequate for home and student use. The screen itself is bright and clear, displaying smooth text and graphics.
The S3-391-6046 weighs three pounds even, which is average for 13-inch ultrabooks, but a lot lighter than larger five-pound laptops you'd find under $500. The included AC adapter adds less than three-quarters of a pound to that in travel weight. The weight and size mean that the S3-391-6046 is a good companion for those who constantly roam the house or need to traverse a school campus. It's also well suited to be your PC companion on a vacation.
The system comes with a pair of USB 3.0 ports and no USB 2.0 ports, saving users the confusion over which port to use. The S3-391-6046 comes with a full-sized HDMI port, so you can hook the laptop up to a large HDTV if you wish. The system has a full-size QWERTY keyboard, but the arrow keys to the lower right are more compact than usual. This isn't too much of a problem for most, but it could make navigating larger spreadsheets or databases harder for those with fists of ham.
The laptop's multitouch touchpad supports all the expected pinch, zoom, scroll, and Windows 8 functions, like bringing up the Charms Bar. That is a good thing, considering that this ultrabook doesn't come with a touch screen display (nor should you expect one at this price point). The touchpad is very responsive, and it is easy to get used to moving the cursor around new Windows 8 interface. Make sure you take a look at the included Windows 8 cheat sheet if this is your first Windows 8 PC. Many of the ways you're used to doing things in previous versions of Windows have changed in Windows 8. The system comes with a 1.3-megapixel webcam for Skype and self portraits.
The S3-391-6046 comes with a bunch of pre-loaded programs (Amazon, eBay, Evernote, newsXpresso, Office 201 trial, WildTanget games, Netflix, Skype, etc.), and while they aren't obtrusive in the new Windows 8 Start screen, they do clutter up the system's desktop mode (aka the screen that looks like your old PC). Connecting the system to our 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi networks were easy, as the S3-391-6046 support both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, giving you extra flexibility. The system lacks an Ethernet port, but wired Ethernet is less prevalent in the home, it's more of a must have in business offices.
The S3-391-6046 comes with a second generation Intel Core i3-2367M processor, four GB of system memory, Intel HD Graphics, a 320GB hard drive and 20GB SSD for speed. The SSD is invisible to the user, it's here to provide speed in booting, launching apps, and waking the system from sleep. It's a little slower than an SSD-only ultrabook, but SSD-only ultrabooks like the Asus Zenbook Prime cost hundreds of dollars more. The system wakes from sleep in a quick 5 seconds, which is about right for an ultrabook. The second generation Intel Core i3 processor is a little bit older than the current third generation processors found in higher end ultrabooks, but it's perfectly alright for home and school users. See more below in our performance section. The system comes with a one-year warranty, which is average for consumer laptops.
Performance
The system's Core i3 processor is much better than the Intel Celeron processor found in lesser budget systems. For example, the S3-391-6046 got a modest 1,883 point score at the PCMark 7 benchmark test, but that's still better than the Celeron-powered Toshiba Satellite C655-S5542 and Acer Aspire 5349-2635
that couldn't run PCMark 7 to competition. The faster, newer Core i3 in the Acer V5-571-6891 was able to help that system achieve a better 2,090 point score.
What's more relevant is the respective system's battery life. The S3-391-6046 comes in with a decent four hours, forty-seven minutes on our video rundown test, a little under Acer's 5.5 hour claims. This is still forty minutes longer than the V5-571-2635 on the same test. Thirteen minutes short of five hours is pretty good for a home or school bound laptop. That gives you enough power to watch a couple movies on the laptop itself, or surf while doing the same in your TV room.
If there's any drawback to using older tech in the laptop, it's that the system doesn't support DX11 3D for newer games. That said, if you have no idea what DX11 is, then you're not missing out on a lot. The system plays casual games like Cut the Rope (found in the Windows 8 Store) and Angry Birds (in your browser) just fine. Videos played smoothly on the 13.3-inch screen, and navigating around the Windows 8 interface was snappy and responsive.
The Acer Aspire S3-391-6046 is a tempting ultrabook. At the $499 Black Friday price, it's a no-brainer, as it's competent to a T with nice styling and portability. The Acer Aspire V5-571-6891 holds on to the current Editors' Choice for budget laptops, since it has a larger hard drive, more memory, a better list price, and a larger screen (with the same resolution). However, for a user who wants more portability, the S3-391-6046 makes a good second choice. If you want to dip your toe in and see if you like the Windows 8 interface, the Acer Aspire S3-391-6046 is a very good system to try.

The sport of horse racing goes back a long, long way. It goes back to circa 4,500 BC when nomadic Central Asian tribes domesticated horses for the first time. Ever after, horse-racing has reigned supreme as a sport fit for Kings.
From the beginning of recorded history, horse racing has been depicted as an organised and popular sport common to all of the world's major civilizations. The Olympic Games of ancient Greece featured events involving both mounted and chariot racing. The sport was then taken up by the Romans. Mounted and chariot horse racing became major areas of enterprise in Roman Empire days; these events were the product of breeding programs with imported bloodlines and extensive training programs. Horseracing had all elements of legalized betting like bookies, proper racing tracks, hit tips, scandals and, red hot entertainment and excitement. Horse racing saw a decline that coincided with the Roman Empire's decline. It began to pick up speed once more once mankind was well into a more modern era.
Horse racing took a professional turn as long ago as the twelfth century, when English Crusader knights came back in the company of Arab horses. This set off a trend that lasted for the forthcoming period of hundreds of years: more and more Arab stallions were imported for crossing with English mares. The ensuing offspring were a real mix of speed and endurance. These cross bred horses were the forefathers of today's horse racing breeds.
As quantum technological jumps in transport and other fields of human concern took place in the 19th century and later , thousands of people became hooked on watching horse races and gambling on racing horses. Horseracing started to get intensive coverage in distinguished newspapers, and gambling volumes consistently increased. The arrival of organised on-site bookmakers brought along a complete sea change. Random and sometimes illegal, sometimes unethical practices led to a moderately successful Jockey Club effort to establish really high standards of order, discipline and integrity that ensured the sport's continued well being.
All around the world, attendance at race courses has been shooting up right into the early part of this century. There had been a decline in attendance during the 1970s and 1980s. The technology wonder of online web wagering has influenced horse racing in ways never conceived of earlier. Online betting has drawn a completely new generation of spectators and betters to the Game of Kings; they prefer to conduct all of their activities in front of their computers and TV sets. NEW ORLEANS -- One of the men burned when an offshore oil platform exploded in flames in Louisiana died Friday, the Philippines ambassador said.
The ambassador, Jose L. Cuisia Jr., said in a news release that 49-year-old Avelino Tajonera died shortly after his wife and three children arrived from Manila.
Three other men remain hospitalized. The ambassador said their families are in Baton Rouge.
The explosion and fire on Nov. 16 also killed 42-year-old Ellroy Corporal, whose body was found in the waters nearby. The search for another man, 28-year-old Jerome Malagapo, was called off.
The explosion and fire occurred on a platform run by Black Elk Energy in the Gulf of Mexico about 25 miles southeast of Grand Isle, La.
A federal agency told Black Elk on Wednesday that it needs to improve safety at its offshore operations.
The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said Black Elk has been cited numerous times for incidents in which it failed to comply with regulations.
The bureau noted the fire and an October 2011 incident where use of an acid-based chemical resulted in the hospitalization of six workers. Another 2010 violation resulted in a $307,000 fine.
"Black Elk has repeatedly failed to operate in a manner that is consistent with federal regulations," BSEE Director James A. Watson said in a news release. "BSEE has taken a number of enforcement actions, including issuing numerous Incidents of Non Compliance (INC's), levying civil penalties and calling in the company's senior leadership to review their performance and the ramifications of failing to improve."
The bureau's letter to Black Elk CEO John Hoffman said failure to improve overall performance could lead to steps including revocation of the company's authorization to operate its offshore facilities. Black Elk's website says it has an interest in 155 offshore platforms.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
"We appreciate the perspective of the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement," Black Elk spokeswoman Leslie Hoffman said in an emailed response to a request for comment. "Safety is a high priority for Black Elk Energy and we will continue to work cooperatively with local and national federal agencies to understand exactly what happened with the incident at our platform in the Gulf of Mexico."
BSEE said it ordered Black Elk to submit a performance improvement plan by Dec. 15. And the bureau outlined several steps that must be taken to improve safety. Those include an end to "hot work" on facilities until the company can demonstrate "that steps have been taken, and a safety manager is in place whose responsibility it will be to improve hazard identification, training, and oversight for such operations."
Hot work is work that can produce flames, sparks or a source of ignition ? such as welding or grinding. The Coast Guard said Friday that a torch was in use at the time of the accident. Grand Isle Shipyard Inc., a subcontractor that was doing maintenance on the platform, has said a welding torch was not in use at the time of the accident.
Other steps outlined by BSEE include keeping the site of Friday's fire shut down, along with other Black Elk facilities where operations have been stopped, or "shut in." BSEE estimated that 41 Black Elk sites are shut in for various reasons.
Friday's accident was on a production platform in shallow water off Louisiana's coast, but it was not producing oil at the time and did not result in a continuous leak of oil, unlike the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster.?

The Federal Ministry of Health in collaboration with key health stakeholders will hold a 3-day National Conference on Family Planning at NICON Luxury Hotel, Abuja between November 27 and 30, 2012.? This year?s conference is the second of its kind after the first National Family Planning held in November 2010.
According to the National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) 2008, Nigeria has a high total fertility rate (TFR) of 5.7 but there is a low contraceptive rate of 14.62% for any method and 9.7% for modern methods. The report reveals that 20 percent of the childbearing Nigerians who want to use family planning services do not have access to it.
The conference, with the theme: ?Population and National Development? will address recent claims of unmet needs for family planning commodities and focus on improving access to Family Planning information and services in Nigeria.
To achieve its goal, the conference will strive to create a platform for dialogue and understanding among key Family Planning Stakeholders in Nigeria, reposition Family Planning in Nigeria as a tool for national development and security, and energize relevant government ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) in a renewed effort to reposition family planning in national planning and development.
The conference will also highlight the strong link between Family Planning and improvement in maternal and child health, and overall quality of life. It will serve as a platform for advocating for increased funding commitments for family planning in Nigeria.
Population and national development is central to achieving the Millennium Development Goals aimed at reducing maternal mortality, providing universal basic education, reducing poverty and hunger, and achieving gender equality.

AMMAN - Syrian rebels captured an army base in the eastern oil province of Deir al-Zor on Thursday, striking another blow against President Bashar Assad.
But Syria's newly-united opposition is struggling to consolidate, and even allies such as Tunisia and Libya have yet to lend their official support.

The capture of the artillery base on the outskirts of Mayadeen, a town on the Euphrates River near some of Syria's main oilfields, further weakens Assad?s control in the strategic region bordering Iraq.
"The whole countryside, from the Iraqi border and along the Euphrates to the city of Deir al-Zor, is now under rebel control," Abu Laila, an official in the Military Revolutionary Council in the province, told Reuters.
He said 44 rebel fighters had been killed in the siege of the base.
Meanwhile, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the violence from Britain through a network of activists, said government shells struck a building next to Aleppo's Dar al-Shifa hospital on Wednesday, one of the main rebel medical centers, killing 15 people.
Most of the dead were fighters but a doctor and three children also died, it said ? although the claims of individual activists in the conflict are impossible to verify.

A look back at the violence that has overtaken the country
Islamists have established themselves as the most effective, best armed and fastest growing units in the 20-month-old uprising against President Bashar Assad.?
Many of them are wary of the National Coalition for Syrian Opposition and Revolutionary Forces, set up earlier this month in an attempt to unify Assad's fractured opponents and win greater international support.
"They are the hotel warriors, we are the men in the trenches. No one should be allowed to marginalize us, politically or militarily. These coalitions are just fighting over us and not for us," said Yassir al-Karaz, a leader in the rebel Tawheed Brigade in northern Aleppo province.
The problem for the new coalition is maintaining the backing of this crucial bloc of Syrian fighters on the ground while bolstering support from Western powers wary of funding a movement that may be linked to extremist groups.?
They're short of medicine, there's no electricity and the basic latrines are seeping sewage. But the continuing air assaults in Syria are forcing thousands of refugees to flee to makeshift camps on the Turkish border. Aid agencies are warning of a growing humanitarian crisis. Alex Thomson Channel 4 Europe reports.
While the coalition has won formal recognition from Turkey, France, Britain and Gulf Arab states, the response from many Islamist fighters has been skeptical.
Tunisia and Libya have agreed to hold off on recognition, saying they want to know more about its makeup before doing so, Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki said Thursday.
