Dozens of defendants have been added to an indictment alleging they helped obtain thousands of prescription painkillers from Florida for illegal sale in Ohio.

Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O?Brien says the organization obtained more than 90,000 oxycodone pills with a street value of $2.8 million.

Authorities also seized 48 firearms during the investigation that alleges the pill pipeline dates to 2010.

Investigators in Ohio and several states have battled so-called prescription tourists for years as they try to stem the flow of drugs from Florida, with its proliferation of pill mills, to other states.

O?Brien said Friday a grand jury has added 38 defendants to the 14 individuals indicted last year.

The prosecutor says two ring leaders sent dozens of people to Florida pain clinics to obtain the pills.

Xamarin 2.0 Lets Developers Write iOS Apps With Visual Studio, Introduces Free Starter Edition

xamarin_iosXamarin, the service that helps developers write cross-platform apps in C# for iOS, Android, OS X and Windows, launched version 2.0 of its platform today. This new version features updates to most of the core features of the platform, but the highlight for most developers is likely the fact that they can now use a Xamarin plugin for Microsoft’s Visual Studio to write iOS apps in C#. The new Xamarin branding now also replaces all the previous Mono-branded names. Xamarin 2.0 Lets Developers Write iOS Apps With Visual Studio, Introduces Free Starter Edition Also new in this version is the Xamarin Studio, a new integrated development environment (IDE) that, as Xamarin CEO Nat Friedman writes in today’s announcement, “is tightly integrated with the iOS and Android SDKs so you can build, test and debug apps on simulators and real devices.” Xamarin Studio features many of the features developers are asking for in a modern development environment, including code completion, a modern debugger and the ability to package and distribute apps right from within the IDE (including support for distribution iOS apps with TestFlight). For Android, Xamarin also includes its own UI builder (for iOS, it uses Apple’s Xcode Interface Builder). The other major new feature is Xamarin’s Component Store, which allows developers to easily add new user interface controls, connections to various third-party cloud services, charts and graphs to their apps with just a few clicks. Some of the components in the store are available for free, but many are obviously tied to paid services and have to be purchased through Xamarin. With today’s launch, the company is also introducing a free (but somewhat limited) Starter Edition of its service that is mostly meant for solo developers. This free version can only be used to develop relatively small apps (up to 32k of compiled code) and, as expected, doesn’t come with any support. Paid versions of Xamarin start at $299 per platform/year for individuals and $999 per platform/year for larger organizations.

4 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Investing in Home ... - Mint

4 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Investing in Home Improvements

Whether you?re sprucing up your home because the lagging real estate market has left you no choice but to ?stay put? for a few more years, or you?re simply ready to take your home?s appearance to a new level, making home improvements can be a great way to change the look, feel, and (hopefully, positive!) value of your dwelling.

But, not all home improvements are created equal, in price, or payoff. Here are four things to consider before you invest in home improvements.

Why are you doing it?

The more clearly you define your ?end game? for home improvements and changes, the more strategic you can be with your priorities, materials, and budget.

Make a list of exactly what you hope to achieve in each project ? and what elements about the current issue drive you crazy.

Are you feeling fed up with your kitchen? Why? Take time to explore and define what changes will actually address your problem, beyond surface ?symptoms.?

For example, a kitchen can feel ?dated? for any number of reasons, which may or may not include cabinetry, tile, paint color, appliances, lighting, countertops, furniture, and the overall layout.

Narrowing down exactly which points need to be addressed to produce the outcome you want can guide you in what must go, and what can be refreshed.

For example, older cabinets that are still functional can easily be improved with simple hardware changes or new paint; a simple fix that can ultimately save you thousands of dollars in materials, and labor.

According to Remodeling Magazine?s 2011-2012 Cost vs. Value Report the ?minor kitchen remodel? is ?the least expensive way to give an existing kitchen a complete facelift,? at a cost of just under $20,000 nationally.

Share your goals openly with vendors and contractors. Most home improvement experts will be happy to work with you to find creative solutions that will achieve the look you want within a reasonable budget.

What?s your neighborhood?s appeal?

Whether you live in a production-style neighborhood where homes tend to look similar, a swanky downtown high rise, or a unique historic neighborhood full of diversity, understanding the key aspects of your neighborhood that will attract potential buyers, may help you make decisions that increase the value your home.

For example, adding a second bathroom to your home when most of your neighbors only have one will typically make your home more attractive to future buyers.

On the other hand, expanding your master bathroom at the cost of losing valuable closet space, or a bedroom altogether, probably won?t be viewed as a benefit if you?re home is located in a family-oriented neighborhood where buyers expect to have several bedrooms.

How long will you stay?

If you know you plan to sell your home within the next five years, weigh the cost of your improvements and how much time and energy you?ll spend on them.

If you intend to hold onto your home for the long-haul, but will rent it out, keep in mind that tenants will not care for high-maintenance floors and finishes like a home owner will.

Choose improvements that will appeal to a mass market buyer and will be simple to fix if damage occurs.

How healthy is your local real estate market?

Some home improvements, like replacement doors, windows, siding, garage doors, and roofing are generally safe bets that add?value and tend to pay off more than total remodels. This is due to both lower costs, and more immediate curb appeal, according to Remodel Magazine.

But, ultimately, the value of a home improvement is largely determined by real estate trends and current market demand at a given point in time.

Though the cost of home improvement projects skew high in Northern and Southern California, Seattle, Portland, and major Texas markets, for example, those expenses are ?more than offset by the total value at resale,? according to Remodel?s Cost vs. Value data.

In short, if you live in a market that hasn?t shown signs of new life since the real estate bubble burst, even a traditionally ?safe bet? improvement may not deliver value until the overall market conditions improve.

Am I Prepared for Unexpected Costs?

Remodeling Magazine?s 2011-2012 Cost vs. Value Report offers an analytical perspective on the average total job cost (based on estimates), compared to the return on investment (expressed through resale) for 35 common home improvement jobs in a variety of markets.

This report can be a valuable resource in determining what your home improvement project should cost.

Keep in mind, however, that final costs are dependent on a combination of factors, including the complexity of the work, existing condition of your home, the contractor you choose, materials, and potential risk of additional ?findings.?

(You never know when that ?minor? bathroom remodel will uncover a major issue that you hadn?t expected).

Allow a ?cushion? of at least ten percent between the contractor?s estimate and the amount of money you have to pay for the work. (If your contractor?s estimate allows for a variance, you?ll need to boost your cushion even higher.

Promising new method for next-generation live-attenuated viral vaccines against Chikungunya virus

Feb. 21, 2013 ? Researchers have successfully applied a novel method of vaccine creation for Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) using a technique called large scale random codon re-encoding. Using this approach, a group from the UMR_D 190, Emerging viruses Department in Marseille, France in collaboration with the University of Sydney, Australia, demonstrated that the engineered viruses exhibit a stable phenotype with a significantly decreased viral fitness (i.e., replication capacity), making it a new vaccine candidate for this emerging viral disease.

This new report publishes on February 21 in the Open Access journal, PLOS Pathogens.

There is an immense need for the development of vaccines targeting many emerging viral pathogens. CHIKV has been responsible for several million human cases over the last decade and represents a striking example of a re-emerging, arthropod-borne, human pathogen for which no licensed vaccine exists. Worryingly, one of the vectors of CHIKV, the mosquito Aedes albopictus, has dispersed into new regions (including temperate areas) resulting in outbreaks of this disease where they had never been previously observed, for example in Italy.

Using the large-scale codon re-encoding method, Antoine Nougairede and colleagues were able to synthetically modify the nucleic acid composition of the virus without modifying the encoded viral proteins. When this method was applied to poliovirus and Influenza A virus, it resulted in a live but attenuated virus that had significant reduction of viral fitness. In contrast with previous studies, which employed a targeted approach of codon re-encoding, this new study demonstrates that a random approach reduced the replicative fitness of CHIKV in both primate and arthropod cells. The employed strategy also prevented the reversion of the attenuated phenotype by mutation or recombination, thus reducing the possibility that the newly created virus strain could evolve back to the pathogenic version.

The findings by Nougairede et al. suggest that large-scale codon re-encoding can provide a strong basis for the rapid design of next-generation viral vaccines against emerging viral pathogens, as soon as their genome sequence has been determined. It represents an exciting route to vaccine development because it intrinsically alleviates the likelihood of novel pathogenic properties of the designed live vaccine, and allows modulation of the amount of reduced fitness by altering the terms and degree of the genetic re-encoding. Thus, this strategy potentially allows for the generic development of live attenuated vaccines against many new viral pathogens, with reduced costs and the potential single dose induction of long-term immunity.

Hand sanitizer possible cause of freak fire that injured 11-year-old girl

Could hand sanitizer light a T-shirt on fire?

Officials in Oregon are researching a possible link between the cleanser and a mysterious blaze that ignited an 11-year-old girl?s T-shirt during a hospital stay. The girl is now scheduled for skin grafts to treat her injuries.

First reported by Oregon Live, Ireland Lane, a cancer survivor, was staying at Doernbecher Children?s Hospital for an unrelated head injury. While playing in her bed on the day she was to leave the hospital, she suddenly ran screaming from the room, her T-shirt ablaze.

Her dad, Stephen Lane, who had dozed off nearby, ran after his daughter and smothered the flames himself. According to the Oregon Live story, Ireland suffered from third-degree burns.

According to Oregon Live, investigators have speculated that the freak occurrence might have happened as the girl was using the wall-mounted hand sanitizer to clean her art project, a painting.?The 3M product, supplied by the hospital, contains 61 percent alcohol, and might have interacted with static electricity from the hospital bedding?static electricity her father says he remembers Ireland trying to cause.

"I've been in medicine going back 30 years now and never heard anything like this. And hopefully I never will again," Dr. Stacy Nicholson, assistant chief at Doernbecher Children's Hospital, told local station KATU.

Contacted by Yahoo News, Rich Hoover, the community liaison for the Oregon office of the state fire marshal, wrote in an email, ?We are still investigating the incident. We have a deputy state fire marshal working on gathering the facts.? He added that the office is hoping that the preliminary investigation will be done by today or Wednesday.

Importance of Secure Socket Layer (SSL) for Websites - Online ...

What is Secure Socket Layer (SSL)? Security Importance of SSL?for eCommerce Websites And How to Maintain Online Security with SSL

With more and more people looking towards the Internet for their Online Shopping requirements, the need for online security continues to be a very real requirement. The convenience of being able to purchase what you need with just a few clicks, rather than enduring the rigmarole of wandering around the high street, aimlessly hoping you find what you?re after, is something that is simply too good to miss. As a business owner, maintaining your website security will increase your foothold in the market. Providing a service that your potential customers can trust can be done with an SSL Cert. With identity theft being a never-ending scandal and malicious attacks being rife, you need to do all you can to encourage a customer?s trust and that can easily be done with online security from Symantec.? SSL, or Secure Socket Layer, is a piece of technology that encrypts sensitive data that the customer may have to transfer to you in order to use your online store, including login details, passwords and credit card numbers. Without this sort of measure, there wouldn?t be any Security present and if a third party was ?eavesdropping?, they could access the details as part of a fraudulent attack. The familiar "https://"?in the address bar is a sign that an SSL certificate is present, meaning that, as a business, you understand the value of your customer and their personal details.?

If you expected your customer to give you their credit card details across the internet without SSL Protection, it would be the same as asking them to write all of their sensitive data on the back of a postcard for all to see. SSL behaves like the traditional envelope, ensuring that all is done to ensure the information inside isn?t leaked to anyone learned enough to look for it.?

Research the various options for Online Security from Symantec and invest in the package that suits your business to keep your customers protected and consumer confidence sky high.?
